NECK

My neck is a painful four letter word.

I didn't sleep well last night.  Unpleasant thoughts led to bad dreams that, apparently, led to a pain in my neck when I woke up this morning.  The hot shower and hot pads have alleviated it a little bit, but its hanging in there.

I started to wonder why it was a neck and not, say, a knee.  We all know that its really a pain in the ass, and that the neck is just the cleaned up version of that... but what an odd substitution.  Trying to get to the bottom of this (ha ha), it turns out that this comes from the phrase "pain in the keister"... which is a suitcase or sample case, or box (from German or Yiddish).  A box.  An ass.  A neck.  I have to wonder if there is supposed to be something suggestive about these.

But a pain in them?

Beats me. Hrm... that might be painful too.

  1. I think it's just where the junction of a lot of nerves are - not so sure about the box though, were they really big, like trunks? Maybe moving them brought on pains in all the likely spots.
